on:Reporting
Sometimes we need to report what other people said, for example phone conversations, news, messages, etc.
This involves quite a few changes depending on the type of sentence. Look at this example:
One of the main changes are verb tenses which should change as shown here:
However, there are other changes that take place in the sentence as well:
Watch this video and pay attention to the characters reporting the situations:

Some people say they distract students and as a result their performance at school is negatively affected.

Choosing a career
Posted January 5, 2014
on:When you attend year 9, you know that soon enough you will have to make a few decisions concerning your future.
Then you start asking yourself questions:
- Should I get a job or go on studying?
- If I get a job, what kind of job should I look for?
- If I go on studying, what sort of subjects or course should I pick?
- A vocational course? A regular one? Which career should I choose ?
- …
Well, maybe these are the wrong questions. First you have to analyse yourself.
You need to think about your personality, your interests and your skills.
- What are you like? What kind of person?
- What areas, hobbies are you interested in?
- What are you good at?
- What do you imagine yourself doing in about 10 years?
- …
Getting an answer to those questions might help you choose a future.
You can also get some help from specialised websites which try to give young people a hand to choose a career path.
Take a look at those two links below. They provide two quizzes that could help you.

Welcome to Britain

on:Hello! I’m happy to see you again.
This year we’ll learn a lot of new things about the English-speaking countries.
Some of them are these here. Look at the map:
United Kingdom, Great Britain or England?
Sometimes it’s a bit confusing, but the maps can help you:
Geographically, we are in the British Isles.
Politically, we have the United Kingdom with
4 different nations.
Their citizens all speak English, but some have their own language and all of them have their own flag.
The union of these flags has a very curious name – the Union Jack.
As for the name Great Britain, it refers to
the 3 nations in the largest island.

on:Imagine someone gave you the chance to visit another country, where would you go?
If I had the chance to choose, I would visit Australia. If I was allowed to choose another one, I would also visit Canada. To start a conditional sentence, we always use IF and the sentences follow a special pattern (padrão)
If it’s a probable condition, we use Type 1.
- If you go to Australia, you will have to travel for 18 hours.
- If you choose Canada, you will fly for 6 hours.
If it’s an improbable condition, we use Type 2.
- If I had enough money, I would stay there for 6 months.
- If I could, I would visit both countries.
Look at these images. What type of conditional are they using?
Let’s try a few exercises. Click below.
